What Is Move-Up?

Also called: Move-up appointment, Extension maintenance, Reinstall

A move-up is the maintenance appointment where grown-out extension rows or tape bonds are removed and reinstalled close to the root — typically every 6–8 weeks.

As your natural hair grows, extension attachment points travel away from the scalp with it. A move-up is the maintenance appointment that resets them: the stylist removes the wefts or tape bonds, and reinstalls the same hair snug to the root again. For beaded and hand-tied rows this means unclamping and re-seating the bead track; for tape-ins it means removing, re-taping, and re-sandwiching the wefts.

Most wearers need a move-up every 6–8 weeks. Skipping them isn't a money-saver — grown-out attachments twist, tangle at the root, and put strain on your natural hair, which is where extension damage actually comes from. Kept on schedule, quality extension hair is reused move-up after move-up.
