What Is Lowlights?

Lowlights are strands colored darker than your base to restore depth and dimension — the opposite of highlights, and the fix for flat or over-lightened hair.

Lowlights work exactly like highlights in reverse: instead of lightening woven sections, the colorist deposits a shade darker than your base. The darker ribbons create shadow and contrast, which makes the remaining lighter pieces pop and gives flat, single-tone hair back its dimension.

They are the workhorse of color corrections for over-highlighted hair — when everything has gone uniformly light, lowlights rebuild the depth that makes color look natural. They are also gentler than lightening, since depositing color does not require bleach.
