What Is Balayage?

Balayage is a freehand highlighting technique where lightener is hand-painted onto the surface of the hair for soft, sun-kissed color that grows out without lines.

Balayage — from the French word for "sweeping" — is a highlighting technique where the colorist paints lightener directly onto the surface of the hair by hand instead of weaving sections into foils. The paint is applied heavier toward the ends and feathered toward the root, so the result mimics the way the sun naturally lightens hair.

Because there are no uniform foil lines, balayage grows out gracefully: no stripe of regrowth, just a soft transition that can stretch 3–4 months between appointments. That low-maintenance grow-out is the reason balayage overtook traditional highlights as the default "lived-in" color request.

Balayage describes the technique, not a color — it can be blonde, caramel, brunette-on-brunette, or anything between, and it is regularly layered with babylights or a face-frame for extra brightness.
