What Happens During a Hair Consultation? (Real Photos Inside)

Walking into a hair salon for the first time can feel intimidating — especially when you're considering a major change like extensions or a color transformation. That's exactly why we offer free consultations. No pressure, no commitment, just an honest conversation about your hair goals. Here's exactly what happens during a consultation at Hottie Hair, with real photos from our Las Vegas salons.

Consultations Are Always Free

A consultation at Hottie Hair is a no-obligation, 30-minute appointment where you and your stylist plan the perfect look together. You'll leave with a clear understanding of what's possible, what it costs, and how long it takes.

Call (702) 979-4468 or book your free consultation online.

Why a Consultation Matters

A consultation isn't just a formality — it's the most important step in getting the results you want. Here's why:

  • Every head of hair is different. Texture, thickness, density, growth patterns, and condition all affect what methods and products will work best for you.
  • Expectations get aligned. You and your stylist agree on the outcome before any work begins — no surprises.
  • You get an accurate quote. Pricing depends on your specific hair and goals, not a one-size-fits-all number from a website.
  • You see the products in person. We carry $100K+ of extension hair in stock — you can touch it, compare shades, and see the quality firsthand.

Step 1: Arrival & Welcome

When you arrive at any of our three Las Vegas locations — Henderson, Summerlin, or West Charleston — you'll be greeted and brought to a styling chair. There's no waiting room shuffle. Your stylist is ready for you.

Bring reference photos if you have them — screenshots from Instagram, Pinterest boards, or even photos of your own hair from years ago when you loved how it looked. Your stylist uses these as a starting point for the conversation.

Step 2: Hair Assessment

Your stylist evaluates your natural hair up close — thickness, texture, density, condition, and growth patterns. This isn't a quick glance. They're running their fingers through your hair, checking elasticity, and looking at how it falls naturally.

During the assessment, your stylist examines your natural hair's texture, thickness, and condition to determine the best approach for your goals.

This assessment determines everything that comes next:

What Your Stylist Is Evaluating

  • Hair Density: How many individual strands you have — affects how many extensions or how much product is needed
  • Hair Texture: Fine, medium, or coarse — determines which extension method or color technique works best
  • Hair Condition: Any damage, dryness, or breakage that needs to be addressed first
  • Growth Patterns: Cowlicks, natural part, and how the hair falls — affects placement strategy
  • Scalp Health: Any sensitivity or conditions that might affect the service
  • Current Color: Natural level, previous color treatments, and any underlying tones

We also take "before" photos at this stage. These serve two purposes — they help your stylist plan the installation or color strategy, and they give you an incredible comparison when you see the final result.

Step 3: Goal Setting & Recommendations

Now that your stylist understands your hair and your inspiration, they'll walk you through realistic options. This is the most important part of the consultation — it's where expertise meets your vision.

Your stylist walks through the recommended approach — what method to use, how many wefts or sessions needed, expected timeline, and total investment.

For extension consultations, your stylist will recommend:

  • The best extension method for your hair type (hand-tied weft, beaded weft, tape-in, K-tip, or I-tip)
  • How many wefts, tapes, or bonds you'll need
  • The ideal length based on your lifestyle and natural hair
  • Whether any prep work is needed (color, treatment, or trim)

For color consultations, they'll cover:

  • Target color and technique (balayage, highlights, full color, etc.)
  • Whether the result can be achieved in one session or will need multiple visits
  • Any pre-treatments needed (especially for dark-to-light transformations)
  • Maintenance schedule and expected color longevity

Step 4: The Extension Wall — See & Touch Before You Buy

This is what sets Hottie Hair apart from most salons. We don't order your extensions from a catalog and hope they match. We walk you to our extension display wall — a massive in-salon inventory of premium hair in every length, shade, and texture — and you get to see, touch, and compare the actual hair that will go on your head.

Why In-Stock Inventory Matters

  • Perfect Color Match: Compare extensions against your actual hair, not a screen
  • Feel the Quality: Touch different textures and weights to know what you're getting
  • Same-Day Service: Many installations can happen the same day — no 2-week wait for shipping
  • No Surprises: What you see at the consultation is exactly what goes on your head
  • Multiple Options: Compare premium vs. standard quality side by side

Step 5: Team Planning

For complex services — like a full set of extensions or a major color correction — your stylist may bring in team members to plan the approach together. This collaborative planning is how we ensure the best results. Two or three experienced stylists looking at your hair is always better than one.

The team approach — multiple stylists collaborate on the plan, which means faster installations and better results. This is especially common for extension appointments.

Step 6: Pricing & Scheduling

By this point, your stylist has all the information needed to give you an accurate, personalized quote. This isn't a range from a website — it's a specific number based on your hair, your goals, and the method selected.

Your quote will include:

  • Service Cost: Installation labor and time
  • Hair Cost: The extension hair itself (varies by quality, length, and quantity)
  • Any Add-Ons: Color blending, trim, treatments, etc.
  • Maintenance Costs: What to expect for move-ups or re-applications
  • Timeline: How long the appointment will take and when to schedule it

There's absolutely no pressure to book on the spot. Many clients take a day or two to think it over, and that's completely fine. When you're ready, you can book online or call (702) 979-4468.

What to Bring to Your Consultation

Consultation Prep Checklist

  • Inspiration photos — Instagram saves, Pinterest boards, or screenshots
  • Clean, product-free hair — No extensions, no heavy products. Let your stylist see your natural hair
  • Questions written down — Price, maintenance schedule, lifestyle concerns, anything
  • Your calendar — If you love the plan, you can book your appointment right there
  • A friend (optional) — Second opinions are always welcome, and it makes the experience more fun

Common Consultation Questions We Hear

"Will extensions damage my hair?"

When installed and maintained properly by a certified professional — no. We assess your hair's condition before recommending a method, and we'll tell you honestly if your hair needs treatment before extensions. Methods like beaded wefts use no heat, glue, or chemicals at all.

"How long will it take?"

The consultation itself is about 30 minutes. As for the actual service — tape-ins take 1-2 hours, beaded wefts take 2-3 hours, and K-tip bonds take 3-4 hours. Your stylist will give you an exact estimate during the consultation.

"Can I get extensions on short hair?"

In most cases, yes. We've taken clients from chin-length bobs to 30 inches in a single appointment. Your hair typically needs to be at least 3-4 inches long for most methods. The consultation will confirm whether your current length works.

"I don't know which extension type I want."

That's exactly what the consultation is for. Most clients walk in unsure and leave with a clear recommendation tailored to their hair type, lifestyle, and budget. Read our complete guide to extension types if you want to research ahead of time.

"What if I want color AND extensions?"

Very common! Many clients get both. Your stylist will plan the color and extension work together to ensure the best result. Sometimes they're done on the same day, and sometimes the color is done first with extensions at a follow-up appointment — it depends on how dramatic the color change is.

"Do I have to commit to anything?"

Absolutely not. The consultation is free and no-obligation. You'll leave with a personalized plan and quote, and you can take as much time as you need to decide. No deposits, no commitments until you're ready to book.
