How Japanese Hair Straightening works?

The process can take at least 3 to 4+ hours depending on your hair length and thickness. Through the use of chemical products the curl structure of your hair is broken. Your hair is then washed, then blown dry and flat ironed. Finally a neutralizer is applied to lock the hair straight.

How much does Japanese hair straightening cost?

There are several factors that can have an effect on price. Let’s break them down to a couple main factors, time and product costs. The main factors here are the length and thickness of your hair.

Product Costs: The Milbon products are a professional system with four strengths. It is also a much more flexible, higher technology and safer than other systems we have worked with before. Having said that, the raw materials that make up the product costs for this true Japanese straightening system are a fair amount higher than others. After many many years using many systems we have found that the better results are worth the higher product costs.

Time & Staff Costs: It is common to have multiple staff members working on your hair 3+ hours that have gone through certified Milbon extensive training programs.

The following breakdown will give you an idea of cost for your hair length and thickness.

Japanese Straightening Base Price
Hair Length, Thickness Base Price
Short to Medium Length $400
Thick Medium to Long $500
Long Thick $600

Free Consultation: While the above information helps to demystify pricing, you can always schedule a free consultation to get an estimate of what it will cost to have straight, frizz-free manageable hair.

What is Japanese Hair Straightening and its History?

LISCIO MILBON JAPANESE STRAIGHTENING

You may question: Why do the Japanese need to have their hair straightened? They already have straight hair! Actually this is just not true.  Many Japanese have wavy or kinky hair.

Milbon introduced Liscio: In Japan in 1996 to satisfy the Japanese people’s desire to have completely straight hair.  Unlike existing relaxers with active ingredients based on Hydroxide and lye, thio-based Liscio is gentler for the hair thereby straightening the hair while leaving it in great condition.

Milbon was the first: Manufacturer to receive Japanese governmental approval for its unique thermal reconditioning system.  Liscio contains a specially formulated solution and iron, which protects and repairs hair from heat damage.

Supporting products: With added protein treatments and supporting products for the thermal reconditioning procedure, it is not uncommon to hear clients proclaim that their hair condition actually has improved after the procedure.

Hottie® Hair is confident: Our line of products and Japanese original techniques will meet your desire to have beautiful straight hair.

How does Japanese straightening compare to Brazilian Blowout?

brazilian blowout vs japanese hair straightening

Brazilian Blowout: Smoothes out the cuticle and repairs hair damage and lasts upto 12 weeks.

Japanese Hair Straightening: Permanently changes the internal bond of human hair.

Brazilian Blowouts: Safe for all kinds of chemically treated hair. Can be used for any hair that has been previously permed, straightened, relaxed, bleached, colored or highlighted.

Japanese Hair Straightening: Can be performed on many types of hair including color treated, bleached, highlighted. However, a consultation is suggested to make sure the hair is suitable to work with. Colored treated hair is a bit more difficult and requires special attention to detail.

Brazilian Blowout: Is a more simple temporary smoothing system and for that reason comparatively costs less.

Rest assured the specialists at Hottie® Hair Salon have extensive training working with every type of hair. We want to make sure every client loves their hair and gets the best results.

Recent Reviews For Japanese Hair Straightening

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Japanese Hair Straightening

Milbon Liscio Hair Straightening is an innovative technique from Japan to make frizzy, curly or wavy hair straight while preserving the hair’s health. In the past, people were concerned that if they straightened their hair, they would damage it significantly, and this was true. It is not true any more. Hair can be straightened much more effectively with the Japanese techniques with much less damage to the hair.

Japanese Hair Straightening typically will improve the hair’s feel, softness and shine while making it more manageable!

The Straightening is performed as follows:

1. Assessing the hair type and condition.
2. Washing the hair.
3. Applying protein to the hair, if necessary for the particular customer and hair type. (small extra charge for this procedure, if you don’t do this when necessary, you could end up with a less than satisfactory result, the stylist will tell you if this is necessary or not in your consultation)
4. Applying Solution #1 (this cuts the hair’s “Cystine Bonds” – the bonds that hold curl or wave patterns).
5. Testing to see when the hair is ready to have Solution #1 rinsed out.
6. Rinsing the hair.
7. Eliminating some excess moisture in the hair (blow-drying to a certain point).
8. Ironing the hair in extremely small sections with a special Japanese 9. Straightening Iron that reaches temperatures of 180 degrees Celsius. Don’t worry, this will not damage your hair unnecessarily. Applying Solution #2 to the hair after ironing is completed.
10. Rinsing the hair and conditioning.
11. Drying the hair and applying a flat iron to remove excess moisture if necessary.

Avoid the use of hair ties for 72 hours so that you do not risk denting the your hair after straightening it. Also do not shampoo for 72 hours after straightening it. After 72 hours use the Milbon shampoo specially formulated for restructured hair. As new growth from your scalp comes in schedule touchups once or twice a year.

Treated hair will remain straight forever and will not become curly or wavy again. New growth that appears in the months following the Straightening will need to be Straightened again. New growth usually needs to be straightened 3 to 6 months after the initial straightening.

Most hair types, except hair that is too fragile as it cannot withstand the heat.

Your hair will be straight, shinier and will feel soft and silky.

Sometimes yes, but just to get the moisture out. This usually takes about 4 to 5 minutes instead of 45 minutes!  Some people will not need to blow-dry at all.  In most cases, you will not need to brush.

No, just the new growth and the transition between Straightened and new growth is treated.  The other hair is protected by using oil or conditioner so the solution will not saturate into the previously straightened hair.  If there is still curl or wave in the previously treated hair or more than 4 month after previous hair straightening, special solution will be applied, but for a shorter period of time.

Crystallizing special solution is designed for treated hair, and this will give more protein to your hair to refresh previous hair straightening.  Also we will iron the whole hair again, or otherwise the transition between will have unwanted line.  Note: the retouch is often more difficult to perform, so it is strongly recommended that you go back to the same stylist as before or find someone better if you were not happy with your first straightening!

Tints and semi-permanent hair color that deposits color are not usually any problem at all.  If you have had your hair dyed black in the past, please let your Stylist know as this can sometimes cause problems.

Highlights can be very tricky.  When hair is highlighted, usually bleach is involved.  This can make the timing judgement very difficult because some hairs are lightened right next to hair that is not lightened.  Therefore the hair may process faster where highlights are present and need much more time where the hair is dark and unprocessed.  In order not to over process the light hair, the solution should be to rinse out and the darker, healthier hair may not take.  A prior consultation with your stylist is strongly recommended to determine whether Japanese Hair Straightening will be a applicable for those with highlighted hair.

Usually not.  The highlights often contain bleach so it is imperative you see your stylist before the Straightening.  They may want to take some hairs of you and test them to make sure it will work well without any surprise.  Any good stylists should be happy to perform a test strand.

A test strand should be performed to be sure the Henna won’t be a problem.

Usually starting from $400 up to $600 depending on the hair length, the thickness of hair, and the amount of chemicals we use.

The process usually takes from 3 to 6 hours straight to be performed.  You may be able to find this service for less, but be aware this is an extremely difficult and precise treatment to perform and those who charge less often are less competent.  Liscio is a very high quality product and the raw cost of this product is also very high. However, this ensures your hair will not be damaged as much as other products.

It would be possible.  If the stylist does not have enough knowledge on the hair straightening, you could get breakage from these treatments, although it rarely happens with trained and competent stylists.

Usually not.  The same amount of time would be involved with the retouch, often the cost will be the same as the first Straightening.  All the hair will still have to be ironed although the solution would be mainly on the roots.

Most relaxers contain corrosive ingredients such as Sodium Hydroxide, Potassium Hydroxide, Lithium Hydroxide, Calcium Hydroxide etc.  These ingredients corrode the hair to the point where it is able to be changed to a straight look.  These products leave the hair feeling like straw and the curl comes back after an often short period of time.
